Farringdon is one of the most historically significant stations on the entire London Underground network: it was the world’s first Underground railway station, opened on 10 January 1863 as the original eastern terminus of the Metropolitan Railway — the very first underground railway anywhere on the planet. Today, over 160 years later, it remains an important and busy interchange in the heart of Clerkenwell, serving the Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines alongside National Rail Thameslink services.

The station sits on Cowcross Street at the edge of Clerkenwell, one of London’s most vibrant and fashionable neighbourhoods, known for its concentration of design studios, independent restaurants and bars, the Clerkenwell Design Week, and proximity to the historic Smithfield meat market, St Bartholomew’s Hospital (the oldest hospital in London), and the ancient church of St Bartholomew-the-Great. The Barbican arts complex and the City of London are just a short walk east.

Farringdon was further transformed by the arrival of the Elizabeth line, with the Farringdon Thameslink station providing one of the most important north–south National Rail interchanges on the line, connecting directly to Gatwick Airport to the south and Luton and Bedford to the north.

• Westbound (towards Hammersmith): King’s Cross St Pancras (3 min) → Euston Square → Great Portland Street → Baker Street → Edgware Road → Paddington → Royal Oak → Westbourne Park → Ladbroke Grove → Latimer Road → Shepherd’s Bush Market → Hammersmith (approx. 25 min)

Metropolitan line

• Westbound/Northbound (towards Aldgate, Baker Street, Amersham): King’s Cross St Pancras (3 min) → Euston Square → Great Portland Street → Baker Street → then on to the outer Metropolitan line branches towards Amersham, Chesham, Watford, and Uxbridge
• Eastbound (towards Aldgate): Barbican (2 min) → Moorgate → Liverpool Street → Aldgate (approx. 10 min)

National Rail — Thameslink

Farringdon is a key stop on the Thameslink cross-London route, one of the busiest and most useful National Rail services through central London.

• Northbound: St Pancras International → Kentish Town → West Hampstead → Cricklewood → Hendon → Mill Hill Broadway → Elstree & Borehamwood → then to St Albans, Luton Airport Parkway, Luton, and Bedford (approx. 45–60 min to Bedford)
• Southbound: City Thameslink → Blackfriars → London Bridge → then to Gatwick Airport (approx. 30 min), Brighton (approx. 60 min), and other Sussex and Surrey destinations via the Thameslink Southern routes
• Thameslink runs through central London connecting Luton Airport and Bedford in the north with Gatwick Airport and Brighton in the south — making Farringdon one of the most useful interchanges for airport connections on the entire network

Smithfield Market 0.2 miles

The historic Smithfield Meat Market, operating on this site for over 800 years, is one of London’s last surviving Victorian wholesale markets and a designated Grade II* listed building. Its magnificent iron-and-glass market hall by Horace Jones (who also designed Tower Bridge) is now being sensitively converted as part of the new Museum of London complex. The surrounding streets, particularly at dawn, retain a vivid, working-market atmosphere quite unlike anywhere else in Zone 1.

St Bartholomew’s Hospital & St Bartholomew-the-Great 0.3 miles

Founded in 1123, St Bartholomew’s Hospital is the oldest hospital in London still on its original site. Adjacent to it, the church of St Bartholomew-the-Great is the oldest surviving church in the City of London, with a breathtaking twelfth-century Norman interior. Together they form one of the most historically rich and atmospheric corners of the entire city — free to enter the churchyard; admission to the church interior is nominal.

Clerkenwell & Design District 0.2 miles

The streets of Clerkenwell immediately surrounding the station form one of London’s most dynamic creative neighbourhoods, home to architecture practices, jewellery workshops, independent design studios, and a remarkable density of excellent restaurants and bars. Exmouth Market, a pedestrianised street of independent food and drink stalls a short walk north, is one of London’s best lunchtime destinations.

The Barbican Centre 0.5 miles
